March 8th, the origin, and meaning

“Women are half of the world”. When we say that, we do not only mention the world’s population but also the role of women in society. Nowadays, women take part in most of every job that a man can do. She can do jobs that require meticulousness and carefulness like a chef, surgeon, … or jobs that were only for men: politician, mechanic, … Not just that, when they are at home, they have a bunch of housework to do and duties to complete as follows: being a mom and a wife, that makes women become extraordinary people. There is a special day called International Women’s day, to honor women for all of their hard work and sacrifices.

1. The origin

At the end of the 19th century, capitalism flourished significantly, especially in the United States. Industry developed, attracting many women and children to work in factories and enterprises. Bourgeois took advantage of the strength of women and children; they pay low wages which made the lives of women and children miserable. Furious at that brutal oppression, on March 8, 1899, in the cities of Chicago and New York (America) the strong struggle of female textile workers, demanding increasing salaries and decreasing working hours, broke out.

Despite being persecuted and kicked out of the factory, the women still united and persisted in fighting, and eventually, the bourgeois was forced to give in. That victory encouraged the fighting spirit of American women workers. In February 1909, for the first time, women all over the United States organized a “Women’s Day” rally to claim equal rights for women. In New York, 3,000 women attended a meeting and made the government admit women’s suffrage.

Those first struggle of American female workers had a great reputation, a source of strong encouragement for the women labor’s movement around the world. In that time, there were two brilliant revolutionary female soldiers, Clara Zetkin (German) and Mrs. Ro-da-luya-xam-bua (Polish). Recognizing the large force and the necessity of having an organization, the two women collaborated with Nadezhda Krupskaya (Lenin’s wife) to establish the International Women’s Secretariat to lead the movement.

On August 26 and 27, 1910, the second congress was held in Copenhagen (Denmark’s capital). In Congress, 100 females from 17 countries attended and decided to take March 8 as an “International Women’s day” to fight for the rights of women and children.

2. The meaning

In 365 days of a year, women have a special day to be concerned and made up for the disadvantages and hardships in life. They always sacrifice silently and endure to build happy families. Therefore, they deserve more respect and care from the other half of the world – men, in sharing the responsibility of doing housework and the difficulty in life family.

No one can deny the great role and responsibility of modern women: They are both housewives and social workers, they not only contribute their strength to the development of the country but also hold a noble position as a mother. Let’s spend a day to honor these amazing women who are our grandmas, moms, aunties, sisters, teachers, … for all of the things they have given to us!
