According to the old legend story, Lac Long Quan – a dragon in human form and Au Co – a fairy gave birth to 100 children, half of them went to the sea and half of them stayed on land. Those who stayed on land built the first nation state of Vietnam – Van Lang at Phu Tho province.

To the local, Hung King is also the god of farming. He taught the farmer how to plow their fields, and how to transplant their rice.

So, in term of religion belief, the festival’s purpose is to pray for the good weather for farming, for farmers to have an abundant harvesting season

“Dù ai đi ngược về xuôi

Nhớ ngày giỗ tổ mồng mười tháng ba…”

This traditional poem is to remind the people that wherever they are or whatever they are doing, they are still the children of a miracle, the descendants of a dragon and a fairy and not to forget their origin.
